What is the difference between VFX and 3D animation?

Animation and visual effects (VFX) are frequently featured in feature films, particularly in Hollywood superhero movies. Naturally, the area of motion pictures is not restricted to foreign films. It has now expanded its wings to include Indian films as well. While the phrase animation and visual effects may appear the same, but they are very different. The view right now is that animation is a subset of visual effects. however, this is not true. Regardless of their distinctions, both are considered fine arts within the Media and Entertainment sector. Before learning the distinction between animation and visual effects let us understand what this means.

What is Animation?

Animation is creating illusions on paintings/sketches/drawings of puppets or human figures for them to move and act in the manner depicted in cartoon series. Alternatively, it is described as "animation is the use of motion graphics to photographs or sketches to generate characters and motion."

Using computer software takes an existing frame or film and transforms it into an animated or imagined scenario. It can be accomplished by hand drawing, computer-generated pictures, or combining the two.

While this approach takes longer to generate a picture, existing cells or frames can be reused to save time.

Example:

1) For most children, cartoons have been their favourite pastime and source of enjoyment.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is a popular Netflix series for children and a much-loved animated film. All of the characters in the episodes are played by human puppets. Suppose we take the principal character, She-Ra — a female warrior – as an example. When we gaze at her, we realise she is a sketch, not a real female. We sketch a single puppet or picture and use illusions to make it move and behave.

We bring that position to life through animation.

2) Other animation examples include titling, modelling, texturing, and rigging.

Additionally, animation has evolved from two-dimensional (2D) to three-dimensional (3D) representations due to continuous technological improvements. The primary distinctions between 2D and 3D are in the type of software utilised, frame rate, and equipment cost. 2D animation is more cost-effective than 3D animation.

Types of VFX and 3D animation

Let us now discuss the many types of VFX and 3D animation.

1. Animated Films

This technique involves drawing images on transparent acetate sheets called cells and photographing them against a white background. It is taken frame by frame, and each frame is somewhat unique. This technique was mostly employed in the twentieth century to create motion picture films.

There are several types of stop motion animation, often called by the medium used. This type of animation is less costly and time-consuming.

3. Computer-generated imagery

As the name implies, they are computer-generated animations. It is subdivided into two sections:-

a. 2D Animation — This type of animation involves manipulating pictures and 2d vector graphics. The procedure incorporates standard animation techniques such as onion skinning, interpolated morphing, and rotoscope.
