Is VFX the Main Hero of Brahmastra?

The Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor starer Brahmastra movie’s trailer is out. The movie also features superstars like Amitabh Bacchan and Nagarjuna. Moreover, the splendid TV actress Mouni Roy is also a part of the star cast. With this star cast, there is another hidden cast in the movie which is the VFX.

This movie has all the ingredients to be a treat to watch for cinema lovers. Ayan Mukherjee, the movie director, and the VFX team have come together to combine visual effects and story effects together. This movie is the first part of the Shiva Trilogy and there are more VFX-laden parts to come. Recently, the trailer of this movie was released so let us understand this trailer from VFX's point of view.

Promising VFX

The VFX looks entertaining and eye-catching. Especially the part where there is an explosion.  The boat scene between Ranbir and Alia is also very entertaining. The same can be said about the fight scenes and the introduction of Amitabh Bachchan and Mouni Roy.

Who is the VFX Studio for Brahmastra?

DNEG is the VFX studio that did the VFX for this movie. The studio is an Indian company. However, they have already proved their mettle in the VFX industry. In fact, their movie Dune was an Oscar winner. Moreover, the sand sequence of Dune was beautifully shot by the VFX team. They were able to recreate the sand sequences of the movie in an amazing manner. In fact, This was the same company that did the visuals for Bahubali and RRR.

How many team members did the Brahmastra VFX team have?

As per the leading newspaper, Asianet Newsable around 250 people worked on the Brahmastra project. This VFX task took them around 5 months to complete. As per News18 another daily Ayan Mukherjee also had a 5 people team in London to do the task of VFX for Brahmastra

What does the CEO of DNEG have to say about the VFX?

Namit Malhotra, the CEO of DNEG in an interview with First Post stated that they would be able to completely transform the expectations of the audience through their visual storytelling. In another interview with the Times of India, he opined that he loved doing the VFX of this movie because it was ingrained in the Indian culture. The other aspect is that it is not a copy of what the West has done.

Is VFX the Hero or Storytelling?

However, it is important to note that Ayan Mukherjee is well known for his storytelling. He has ventured into visual storytelling through this movie’s VFX. However, Ayan is well known to weave good stories and characters with or without VFX. Yeh Jawani Hai Dewani or Wake up Sid is the best example of it. We love these movies because of their amazing stories.

Is It Too Early to Judge the VFX with just the Trailer?

Maybe it is very early to say about the entire VFX right now and the trailer might not be able to give full justice to the end product. At the end of the day, the production house is Dharma Productions which has always harnessed technology and has a very high budget to make a fantastic VFX movie. The budget is said to be 300 crores and enough money is pumped into the VFX department to make the movie look grand.

Also, the name of the main characters is Shiva and Isha which reminds us of Amish Tripathi’s book Immortals of Meluha so there are a lot of speculations that this movie is an adaption of that book. This is because Karan Johar had bought the rights to this book. This book had some amazing picturesque narrations of characters and fight sequences. If these sequences are brought to life with the VFX it can create wonders. Only time will tell when the movie will be released on September 9th about how it has faired.
